Healthy Night Routine Ideas:
1. Prepare your lunch for work or school
After you finish eating dinner, it would be a great time to also pack up your lunch for tomorrow. You’ll have a less hectic morning and will be able to tailor your morning hours for other productive things.
While you’re packing a lunch for tomorrow, you can also use this time to put away dishes and/or wash the dishes to declutter your sink and kitchen space.
You’ll thank yourself later!
2. Set out your clothes for tomorrow
Preparing for your day the night before can significantly reduce your stress as you get in bed. You won’t have to worry about what’s happening tomorrow or what you need to do if you’ve already started preparing the night before.
While you are setting out your clothes, also gather up the essentials you’ll need in one spot to minimize frantic mornings.
It’ll save you a lot of time later!
3. Decide on what time you should sleep
Having a set time to sleep will help you get the most out of your night routine. If you don’t know what time you’re aiming to go to bed, you most likely will go to bed at different times every night which will directly affect your morning routine.
Try to go to sleep at least 7-8 hours before you need to wake up in the morning.
For example, if you need to wake up at 6 am then you need to be sleeping by no later than 11 pm (at the LATEST).
As you think about what time you need to wake up, go ahead and set your alarm while you’re at it.
4. Cut off caffeine early
This feels obvious to me, but a lot of people love drinking coffee all hours of the day (I was one of those people).
If you’re going to have a cup of coffee or caffeinated tea, drink it 4-5 hours BEFORE you plan on heading to bed. That way your body has time to get tired.
5. Avoid strenuous exercise
Instead of doing a hardcore workout at night, try doing yoga or simple stretches to get your body relaxed and ready for bed.
Doing an intense workout can give you more energy, which is the opposite of what you want at night.
6. Meditate
Meditate to further relax. Meditating can help relieve stress, calm your mind, and give you a sense of ease. I am a huge advocate of meditation. If you find that you are an anxious person or are always stressed, meditation can help you.
You can truly connect to yourself and the universe through meditation. If you are unsure of how to meditate or have never done it before, there are guided meditation videos on YouTube that you can use or meditation apps.
I love using the Headspace App because it is super visual, the graphics are amazing, and the choice of selections and quality of work is simply AMAZING! You can try it out for free to see if you like it.
Headspace isn’t sponsoring me or anything- although they should because I am ALWAYS promoting it! I geniunely love this app!
7. Put away screens
After you’ve done all of the things to prepare for the night, put your phone and computer away. Dedicate this time to yourself. Being on your phone and/or computer at night can prohibit you from sleeping.
The blue light in phones and laptops affects our melatonin. It makes your brain think that it isn’t bedtime.
I know it can be tempting to get on your phone if you find yourself unable to sleep, BUT it will only make things worse!
8. Take a warm bath or shower
Taking a warm bath or shower at night can truly relax your body. When your body heats up from the shower and naturally cools down after, it’ll also relax your body simultaneously.
Therefore, shower or bathe before hopping in bed. You’ll naturally feel more tired.
Showering or bathing at night gives you the perfect time to do your nighttime skincare routine.
9. Do your night skincare routine
After showering and cleaning your body, you are now all set to start your skincare routine. Having a skincare routine at night leads to healthier skin, helps you feel more relaxed, and helps your skin repair itself overnight.
It sounds like a win-win! Use this time to moisturize your face and your entire body. Pamper yourself a bit.
10. Journal to relieve stress
Having a daily journal has all kinds of proven mental health benefits. You can write about how your day went, what’s on your mind, what your goals are, and things you are grateful for.
Journaling every night has become a ritual for me because my mind is always racing at night. It helps and calms me when I get my thoughts out of my head and on paper.
11. Make a to-do list for tomorrow
If you find that worrying keeps you awake at night, try writing out your to-do list the night before. You’ll have a better day the next day and you’ll feel more at ease throughout the day because you’ll know exactly what you need to do.
A recent study found that those who wrote down a to-do list fell asleep faster than those who didn’t write one or only wrote about what they did that day.
Feel less anxious with a practical to-do list.
12. Read a book
Reading every day has amazing health benefits. It improves your memory, increases your vocabulary and comprehension, prevents cognitive decline as you age, and reduces stress.
These benefits are things that will tremendously change your life! I have noticed a huge shift in the way I think and how I feel due to my reading habits. Reading is good for you AND fun.
Here’s a great list of book recommendations I swear by!
In closing,
The last thing you want to be at night is stressed! Being stressed or anxious about anything will bleed over into the next day and become a terrible domino effect.
Take care of your mind, body, and spirit by using these amazingly healthy night routine ideas.
