People have been moving into new places left and right! There are a lot of resources and posts out there trying to convince people to buy all kinds of random kitchen tools just to make a quick buck.
As someone who has moved twice in two years, I can share a thing or two about the apartment kitchen essentials you’ll actually NEED and USE.
Don’t bother wasting your time buying things that you don’t need or won’t use right away.
Here is the best apartment kitchen essentials list that you’ll use for your first apartment, and if you’re at a different stage in life, it’ll even help those who are looking for college apartment kitchen essentials.
Apartment Kitchen Essentials List
1. Pots & Pans
Get you a nice set of pots and pans. You’ll definitely use them to cook almost every meal. You can purchase these items at Target, Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond (when there’s a sale), or Amazon.
2. Cooking Utensils
How do you plan on stirring and moving your food around? Having cooking utensils is equally as important as pots and pans.
Get these items from Target or Amazon.
3. Bowls & Plates
A must-have kitchen item for sure! You can get these items from Target, Goodwill (if you like thrifting), Walmart, or Amazon.

4. Cups & Mugs
These are as equally important as the bowls and plates. You shouldn’t spend too much on these items if you are on a budget. Cups and mugs are also great gifts to give!
5. Set of Utensils
Having a nice set of spoons, forks, and butter knives are must-have kitchen items as well. Looking for a certain style or color? Check out Amazon or Target.
6. Toaster
Now, a toaster can be EXTREMELY useful! It is definitely a kitchen essential! You can toast bread, waffles, croissants, toaster strudels… YUM!
These items also typically cost less so it’s a great tool to have to eat breakfast on a budget.
7. Coffee Pot/Keurig/French Press
This isn’t necessary if you don’t drink coffee, but as a full-time teacher, coffee is DEFINITELY NECESSARY for me. There are several coffee options you can choose from.
Buy whatever fits your needs.
8. Baking Pans in Various Sizes
You need these items. Most apartments and homes come with stoves so it’s important to have the necessary tools to use the stove.
You’ll find yourself baking pizza, cookies, cakes, or whatever you are craving.

9. Oven Mittens
These are necessary to refrain from burning your hands.
10. Blender
Let me be frank, this kitchen item isn’t necessary if you are on a budget. However, if you like smoothies or milkshakes, then perhaps you should invest in a nice blender.
My blender is from Target, but you can pretty much purchase anything from Amazon.
11. Set of Knives
These are extremely important! I remember when I moved into my first college apartment. My roommates and I didn’t even think to buy knives.
It wasn’t until we need to cut meat or open something that we realized we didn’t own knives. Make sure to get the set that comes with meat-cutting scissors. LIFE SAVER!

12. Paper Towel Holder
TBH, I don’t have one of these yet- after all of this time living on my own- but I plan to get one… eventually. It’s just something that isn’t like ESSENTIAL.
It’d be nice to have one, but things won’t fall apart if you don’t have a paper towel holder.
13. Dish Towels & Sponges
I find that these are really important. You’ll end up using them a lot for drying and cleaning things, so just go ahead and purchase a few.
14. Trash Can
DO NOT FORGET YOUR TRASH CAN! Otherwise, you’ll spend days throwing things away in random garbage bags hanging on the side of your pantry door.
Been there!
15. Dish Soap & Dish Pods
Think about what you need to clean your dishes after using them. A simple rinse won’t do it. You need to thoroughly clean them!
16. Trash Bags
I almost forgot to mention that you need these as well! It’s a necessary kitchen item for sure!
